My factory manual for 87 shows the orange wire going to the orange wire on the ignition switch and the b/w going to the stop light filament in the bulb. Other circuits energized by the orange wire are, nuetral indicator light, the dimmer switch, turn signal switch, horn, side stand relay, turn signal relay, also and Orange/black trace wire feed the voltage regulator/rectifier. Orange wire shold be hot with the key on so any place it touches ground, or another wire could overload the circuit and blow the fuse. Don't assume a new switch is always a good one, but check the b/w wire and bulb itself and its socket before spending time up under the gas tank and main wiring harness. Max
